Continuously Learning…

If you are not actively learning and growing, then by default you’re just stagnant and standing still. I frequently hear, “I don’t know how you do it—I can’t keep up with you.” Well the word bored is not in my vocabulary at all. If I stop, it’s because I decided to, not because I have nothing to do. I always have more to do than the time at my disposal will allow.

I am a perpetual learner—it’s in the very nature of what I do. In every issue of Bead Unique, I try to show you a new technique, a new artist, and maybe a better way to do this or that. So when something comes up that I am not knowledgeable in, I run to all the experts in that field and say, “Pretty please—teach me!” And they do.

At BeadFest in Philadelphia a few weeks ago, I took off my Editor hat and put on the student gloves. It is part of my nature to want to be a student and learn from experts. This time, my Managing Editor, Joanna, and I took a whole class. Kim St. Jean was the teacher (and she was stellar). Since then, I have been bugging all my friends for junk to destroy, I hammer everything in sight, and I’m obsessed with learning the ins and outs of cold connections. If I, as an editor and teacher, am to understand a student’s perspective, then I must be one often. (I just have to not be whiney about it.)

Issue 23 Winter 2010

Fall 2009 coverWith the holidays coming, I am always looking for ways to give homemade or make homemade. Well, this issue is JAM-PACKED with both! As our cover shows, we have a cool cold-connection project for you—get out the hammers and anvil and start banging away! Save money using found items and recycle old jewelry for fun.

Meet the O’Neil Sisters—our flea market queens for this and the next three issues! You will have a blast making a purse from an antique book.

Now, let’s talk SHOES! Oh yeah, and not just shoes, but boots as well. Dress up those black patent leather heels, romantic pumps, hot fashion boots, and more! Check out all the great ideas.

For all you seed beaders out there, we have a few pieces that will melt your holiday hearts. Tatiana Van Iten brings us the perfect Holiday bracelet, and Elizabeth Pullan shows us how decadent freeform work can be—great projects for those cold winter days.

What fun would winter be without great winter home décor? Create a sentimental garland piece, a stunning metal clay tassel, and a whimsical bottle for your bookshelf or baker’s rack.
