Editor Pamela Hawkins, Laura Timmons, and Joanna Feller,at the 2009 Crystallized-Swarovski Elements Event in Tucson, AZ.

If you consider the size of the world, not many of us really live close to the beach, but ALL of us want to play there. How can you not be motivated when it is dripping with inspiration? Every one of the senses is affected. The SMELL of the sea. The SOUND of the waves and gulls calling. That VIEW of the ocean that never ends and the FEELING of sand on my toes. After a short walk, there is a TASTE of salt on my lips from the moisture in the air. My hair starts to curl, and I can’t count how many times my lungs fill with the ocean breeze and each exhale carries away another tiny piece of stress. Hands down, one of the top 10 inspirational places to go to this summer is the BEACH. That is what inspired this issue of Bead Unique.
Our cover project, Caribbean Dreams by Nikki Ryan (p. 34), spearheads our summer issue with a gazillion crystals in mouth-watering colors! Want more? Check out Beki Haley’s encased Rivoli necklace on p. 8. Kim Ballor’s lampwork cupcake on p. 22 is free of calories, but it’s certainly not lacking in tasty cuteness! Step it up a notch and make Tammy Osczepinski’s lampwork wave bead (p. 30). Tamara Honaman shows us how to use those funky-shaped stick pearls in a beautiful bracelet (p. 32). Revamp old flatware with Elena Hallows’ fun project on p. 60. Dress up a terra cotta pot with beads and chain (p. 66) and create some FISHY beaded wind chimes (p. 64) for your porch. It’s summertime and the feeling is beady!

Issue 21 Summer 2009

There are a bunch of new and exciting things to tell you about in this issue!

Summer 2009 cover 1. Since Bead Unique was born, we have included Econo-tips in many of our projects. Saving money and repurposing or recycling is ever- present in our everyday lives, especially during these tough economic times. We have made that a little easier to do: Now, EVERY project in Bead Unique has a money-saving idea or a tip on recycling or repurposing. Just look for the BIG GREEN DOT in every project!

2. Even though the Crystal Chix Cruise is but a lovely memory, we still have cool things to share with you all! We will feature one Crystal Chix Cruise project in this issue and in each of the next three issues—in this issue, you can find Kristal Wick’s sparkly, beachy necklace on p. 15. We will also have a GREAT BIG GIVEAWAY for one of the FABULOUS bags from the cruise, which is filled with beady goodies with a retail value of over $500.00.

3. Our most exciting news is that Bead Unique Magazine is having its first retreat-style educational event! Come bead and relax with us at the Bead Unique Tahoe Mountain Bead Retreat. Set in the beautiful Lake Tahoe area, this exclusive Bead Retreat will take place at Squaw Valley Resort & Village from October 1–4, 2009. The retreat will begin with special classes taught by me, Pamela Hawkins, and CRYSTALLIZED™—Swarovski Elements Ambassador Laura Timmons. After that, students will attend a full-day class with each of our three incredible, world-renowned instructors: Sherry Serafini, Marcia DeCoster, and Beki Haley! The fun-filled retreat will end with a fantastic dinner. It’s Bead Pampering at its best! Seats are limited to 60, so sign up early! Registration begins on April 21, 2009 at www.beaduniqueretreats.com. bracelet
