Summer 2007 Cover

Shape and Color!

It’s SUMMER! It is that time of year to sit back and relax. Enjoy the sun—sink your toes into the sand. Not everything should be so structured. We need some rambling vines on our wrists, like Kelli Burns' English Picket Fence Bracelet. Break away from exacting design and ramble a little.  An easy way to do this is to think of your designs in an expressive way. First, think of COLOR. Then, think of things you love to eat…like Gumdrops (Jennifer Colbern's Gumdrop Dreams), Butterscotch (Susan Berkowitz's Leaf Impressions), Juicy Berries (The Hole Bead Shoppe's Chandelier Choker) or even Gumballs (Handmade Glass Beads by Martha Proctor in the Gallery). The idea here is to let your imagination go…to see color and shape in a very natural and alluring state. I suggest you start with your local farmers' market.  If you can’t get to the farmers' market, go to the produce department of your favorite grocery store. It will talk to you and inspire you in very cool ways.
