Fig. 2
|
- Slide a 9mm x 18.5mm crystal teardrop onto each of three eye pins and create a trapeze loop with the straight end (Fig. 1).
- Top dangle: String one round pearl and one crystal teardrop dangle onto an 8" piece of 24-ga. wire. Fold wire in half over the pearl. Slide both free wire ends through one pearl teardrop, one rondelle, one silver round, two bugles, one bicone crystal, one bugle, one bicone crystal, one bugle, and one silver round. Twist the remaining wire to secure. Shape dangle into a slight curve with the crystal teardrop dangle hanging freely.
- Middle dangle: String a round pearl onto a 12" length of 24-ga. wire and fold wire in half over the pearl. Slide both free wire ends through one pearl teardrop, one rondelle, one silver round, and two bugles. Twist wires once, and then separate the wires.
- To form a branch, add one bugle, one silver round, one rondelle, one pearl teardrop, and one round pearl to one wire. Skip the last pearl added and pass the wire back through the remaining beads. Twist the wires once, then slide both wire ends through one silver round, one crystal teardrop dangle, one silver round, one bugle, one bicone crystal, one bugle, and one silver round. Twist the remaining wire once to secure. Shape dangle into a downward curve with the crystal teardrop dangle hanging freely. Curve the branch upward.
- Bottom dangle: String a round pearl onto an 8" length of 24-ga. wire and fold the wire in half over the pearl. Slide both free wire ends through one pearl teardrop, one rondelle, one silver round, two bugles, one bicone crystal, one bugle, and one silver round. Twist the remaining wire once to secure. Shape the dangle into a sharp downward curve with the crystal teardrop dangle hanging freely.
- Join dangles: Align the bottom beads of the top and middle dangle and twist the wires together. Add the bottom dangle about 1" lower and twist the wire with the others
(Fig. 2).

| Preparing sprigs |
-
String a round pearl onto a 20" length of 28-ga. wire and fold the wire in half over the pearl. Slide both free wire ends through one 6mm x 8mm crystal teardrop, one round pearl, one bugle, one bicone crystal, one bugle, one bicone crystal, and one round pearl. Twist wires once and divide wires.
-
To create a branch, add one round pearl, one bugle, one bicone crystal, one bugle, one bicone crystal, one bugle, one round pearl, one 6mm x 8mm crystal teardrop, and one round pearl to one wire. Skip the last pearl and pass the wire end back through the remaining beads. Twist wires once to secure.
-
Slide both free wire ends through one bugle, one round pearl, one bugle, and one pearl. Twist wires once, and then divide the wires. Repeat step 2 to create a branch with the longer of the two wires. Twist the two wires to form a 3"-long wire stem and trim excess wire.
-
Repeat steps 1-3 to create a second sprig.
-
Arrange the sprigs so one points up and the other points down, overlapping their 3"-long stems. Twist the stems together a few times to form one unit.
|
Preparing the beaded flower base |
-
Add one silver round to a 28" length of 28-ga. wire and fold the wire in half over the bead. Thread both free wire ends through one upward-facing flower bead, one downward-facing flower bead, one round pearl, one leaf bead, and one round pearl. Twist wires once and separate.
-
Add one round pearl, one flat crystal tube, and one round pearl to one wire. To form a beaded flower, add one round pearl, one leaf bead, one round pearl, one downward-facing flower bead, one upward-facing flower bead, and one silver round. Skip the silver round and pass the wire end back through the last five beads added.
-
Repeat step 2 twice more.
-
Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other wire.
-
To form a sprig, add one round pearl, one flat crystal tube, one round pearl, one flower bead, one round pearl, one bicone crystal, one bugle, one bicone crystal, one bugle, one round pearl, one 6mm x 8mm teardrop, and one round pearl to one wire end. Skip the last pearl added and pass the wire end back through the remaining sprig beads. Twist and secure end wires. Repeat to create a sprig on the other wire end.
|
Preparing pearl stems |
-
Add 2-1/2" of round pearls to the spool of 28-ga. wire. Slide a pearl to 2" from the wire end and fold the wire with the pearl at the tip. Twist the two wires tightly together to form a 1-1/2"-long stem.
- Slide another pearl down the wire about 1-1/4" away from the first stem. Fold the wire with the pearl at the tip, and then twist to form a shorter stem. Note: Leave about 1/32" of wire between stems. Continue making stems of varying lengths (between 1" and 2"). After forming the last stem, cut the wire from the spool.
- Straighten and arrange the stems parallel to one another, forming a straight bottom edge.
|
| Assembly |
-
Stack and center vertically the following elements in order: the combined sprigs, the combined dangles (in profile), and the beaded flower base. Use two short pieces of wire to twist and hold the pieces together.
-
Weave the pearl stems through the teeth of the hair comb, filling the entire length of comb (with one or two stems on each side of each tooth). Snug the wires up to the bridge of the comb. Straighten and arrange the stems, forming a channel (Fig. 3).
-
Center the combined beaded elements in the channel. To secure the elements in place, select a stem from each side at the comb center; pull the base of stems together and twist once or twice, concealing the twist under a flower or leaf. Separate the stems. Repeat eight more times, working along the entire length of the comb.
-
Looking at the comb from several angles, arrange the elements in three dimensions. Pull some of the stems straight up and out, and others to the left and right. Arrange the flowers and leaves to help conceal the working wires beneath. Set the four top and bottom sprigs in graceful curves. Arrange the three crystal teardrop dangles to enable free movement. Make any final adjustments after attaching the comb to the bride's hair.
